Voters sent an unprecedented number of women to Congress on Nov. 6. In addition, women and minority candidates added to the gains they made last year in state and local elections. Governing reporter Liz Farmer looked at results from key races and analyzed important trends, including the fact that the number of women in state legislatures could be on track to hit an all-time high. Voters also sent a message to hard-liners on the left and right. For instance, middle-of-the-road Democrat Tony Evers defeated polarizing Republican incumbent Scott Walker in the Wisconsin governor’s race and Maryland incumbent Gov. Larry Hogan, a moderate Republican, easily beat Democrat Ben Jealous, a candidate running on one of the most left-wing policy platforms in the country.
